The first version of the 1.5 tonne payload L 1500 model began production in the summer of 1937. It was offered with either a 2.2 litre six-cylinder 45 hp petrol engine, or an equally as powerful OM 138 4-cylinder diesel. Flatbed, ambulance, and O 1500 small bus variants were available. Production of the first version lasted for four years until 1941, when the model was replaced by a new design of the same name and payload. Pictured on the right is an early version, which has a different front end design, with some subtle differences in the cab as well. 2,585 L 1500s were produced from 1937 - 1941.
The successor to the 1937 model (pictured right) came in 1941, with the rear wheel drive L 1500 S, and all wheel drive L 1500 A. These models featured a redesign and updated drivetrain. The all wheel drive version was primarily designed as a personnel carrier for the German military, and was available with a 3 metre wheelbase and crew-cab, not dissimilar to a car. The standard rear wheel drive variant was offered as a 3.5 metre wheelbase platform truck, or a 3 metre fire appliance. This new model was driven by a 2.6 litre petrol M 159 engine which produced a power output of 60 hp.
